Apple: The absolute and total un-debuggability of iMessage

I’ve just given up on probably my fifth or sixth attempt to get iMessage working on my MacPro. Long story: don’t bother. Short story: it’s broken. Somewhere.

When it works it works, when it doesn’t…

I love the idea of iMessage – getting txts everywhere, no matter what device or machine you’re on. The reality is that like many bits of Apple technology, it either works seamlessly, or it doesn’t work at all and you can’t do anything to fix it.

iMessage used to work really well on my MacPro. Then one day it stopped. I could still log in, but messages didn’t appear. Then one day I couldn’t even login.

You should be able to figure out what’s going wrong

Ok. So I can’t log in anymore: this is the helpful screen shot:

“An error”. Messages isn’t going to say what error, as that would be too helpful. Run Console to check the logs, and there are a series of cryptic messages that don’t actually help users – apparently “Registration failed for Registration info” and “Could not find an account for service: (null)”. OK

What about Facetime?

Oh Facetime works just great. I’m not sure why it has a separate login from iCloud and iMessage though (i.e. why you have to log in to all three separately).

Unhelpful Advice from a Genius

“Bring your machine into the Apple Store”.

It’s a MacPro. It’s not small. Or light.
